Dinah demonstrates excellence

26 June 2017

We’re proud to announce Southern Cross Care’s multi-million dollar Dinah extension to the Pearl Retirement Resort is the joint winner of the 2017 Aged and Community Services (ACS) SA & NT Awards for Excellence Aged Living Design Award.

The award, presented at the ACS Awards for Excellence Dinner on Friday 23rd June 2017 at the National Wine Centre, recognises new and renovated buildings which are innovative in providing appropriate accommodation or housing for older Australians.

The extension to the existing 65 bed facility comes with 20 new bedrooms, including a dedicated, fit for purpose, memory support unit.

Southern Cross Care CEO David Moran said he was proud of the extension which demonstrates the core aims and beliefs of Southern Cross Care.

“We made the decision to expand its building using recognised Design for Dementia principles, to provide an improved environment for residents to feel comfortable and familiar with a home-like environment,” he said.

“The recognition of our services within local communities is of vital importance to us.“

“This is why we developed a ‘connected’ approach to everything we do. We connect people with care, we strive to keep people connected to their lives and we best look after the people in our services by being a connected organisation.”

Although the facility had an existing, operational memory support unit, no particular dementia friendly design initiatives had previously existed at this site.

Southern Cross Care made the decision to expand its building using recognised Design for Dementia principles, to provide an improved environment for residents to feel comfortable and familiar with a home-like environment.

These principles lead to the creation of many unique features including coloured doors and laminates to assist residents to identify their own rooms easily, from outside and within.

Other features included the use of illuminated memory boxes near each bedroom door to enable residents to display important personal belongings and personalise their own room and doorway and colourful and bright lounge and dining space, using colour to assist residents to navigate the spaces.

Southern Cross Care was the joint winner with UnitingCare Wesley Port Adelaide's Wesley House Aged Care.

The award follows our outstanding Health & Wellness Centres who were recognised by Aged & Community Services for their Innovation in Service in 2016.
