Les Foale didn’t consider volunteering in his younger years, but now he’s passionate about lending a hand.
As Les approached retirement, he pondered with the idea of giving back to the community – and now you’ll find him with a blower or shovel, helping the maintenance team at Southern Cross Care’s site, West Beach Residential Care.
But it’s not all about handy work on site, Les enjoys meeting new people and contributing to the quality of life for older people.
“There’s a lot to do here… and I leave the centre feeling fulfilled,” he said.
“Volunteering helps me stay active, fit and healthy while helping Southern Cross Care – a typical day is entertaining, fun and varied.”
And while he’s only been volunteering for a short period, he’s already making connections and building friendships.
“Gardening and maintenance is something I love doing, but I am also getting to know the staff and residents which is great as well,” he said.
Southern Cross Care has over 400 volunteers from all ages and backgrounds who enrich the lives of the older people we support. We thank them for everything they do – especially during National Volunteers Week which was held from May 8-14!
National Volunteer Week is an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation's volunteers. During this week, thousands of events across the country were held to say thank you to the 6 million Australians who volunteer.
