We’ve been nominated for two awards at the 2017 Aged and Community Services SA & NT Awards for Excellence – the Organisation Award and the Aged Living Design Award.
The Organisation Award recognises a provider organisation that demonstrates special or unique leadership, innovation and excellence to the sector.
During the nomination process we were proud to illustrate our Southern Cross Care Arts Initiative which focussed on supporting the well-being of customers across residential, community and retirement living services by enhancing positive emotions.
We helped facilitate social connections, promoting a sense of purpose amongst customers, and enabling them to continue to contribute to the world.
The Aged Living Design Award recognises new and renovated buildings which are innovative in providing appropriate accommodation or housing for older Australians.
We happily nominated the Dinah extension to the Pearl Retirement Resort involving an extension to the existing 65 bed facility with 20 new bedrooms, including a dedicated, fit for purpose, memory support unit.
Although the facility had an existing, operational memory support unit, no particular dementia friendly design initiatives had previously existed at this site.
We made the decision to expand its building using recognised Design for Dementia principles, to provide an improved environment for residents to feel comfortable and familiar with a home-like environment.
The list of specific Design for Dementia features for this extension project was long but one of our favourite features is allowing all residents the opportunity to directly access the outdoors from their own room – everyone has a sliding door to the outside and the opportunity to access garden areas at any time.
In 2016 our outstanding Health & Wellness Centres were recognised by Aged & Community Services for their Innovation in Service, so let’s hope we can back it up with another winner!
