Diabetes and foot health
Diabetes can have a significant impact on foot health, often in ways that may go unnoticed.

National Diabetes Week is held in July, so to tie in with this important awareness campaign, Southern Cross Care’s Podiatrist has some information for you on foot health.
Nerve damage (neuropathy) and poor circulation can increase the risk of:
- Loss of sensation, leading to unrecognised injuries
- Slow-healing wounds, increasing the risk of infection
- Foot ulcers that, if untreated, may lead to serious complications
Recognising the warning signs
It is important to monitor your feet for any changes. Please be aware of the following signs:
- Numbness or tingling – May indicate nerve damage
- Swelling, redness, or pain – Could be a sign of infection
- Cuts or sores that don’t heal – Increased risk of complications
- Changes in skin colour or temperature – May suggest circulation issues
If you notice any of these symptoms, we strongly recommend booking a podiatry appointment as soon as possible.
Protecting your feet: daily care tips
To reduce the risk of complications, consider these daily foot care practices:
- Check your feet daily – Look for cuts, swelling, or colour changes
- Wash and dry thoroughly – Keep feet clean, ensuring to dry between the toes
- Moisturise regularly – Prevent dry skin but avoid applying lotion between the toes
- Wear appropriate footwear – Choose shoes that fit well and provide support
- Schedule regular podiatry check-ups – Early detection is key to prevention
The importance of regular podiatry check-ups
A professional podiatry assessment ensures:
- Early detection of nerve and circulation issues
- Prevention of foot ulcers and infections
- Personalised care, including footwear and skin management advice
We recommend a foot health assessment every 3-6 months (depending on your individual foot condition), or sooner if you experience any issues.
